Quick Bits: Holliday, Mitre, Hairston

Here are three quick news items as the night winds down:
- If the Yankees are, indeed, interested in Matt Holliday, they aren’t showing it.
- To maintain depth, the team will pick up Sergio Mitre’s $1.25 million option for 2010.
- Jerry Hairston Jr. filed for free agency today. Only Andy Pettitte remains outstanding.

I still think they will end up sending Mitre through waivers right before the Rule 5 draft to clear a spot on the 40 man roster. If he isn’t claimed, he can be stashed in AAA in case needed. If he is claimed, they don’t really lose anything as the claiming team takes on his salary.

There’s talk of using him in the Yankee bullpen, although I’m not sure how reliable that information is.

If they don’t want to risk losing him through waivers, I guess they could see in ST if he is effective enough in the BP to be an asset there or at least be stashed there in case needed. However, that seems to be the plan with Aceves and Gaudin already, and Mitre is the most likely to actually make it through waivers and would be below Gaudin and Aceves on the starter depth chart anyways (not to mention, IPK/Nova/McCallister)
