Quick Bits: Mariano, Nady, Posada

November 29, 2009, 7:30 pm by iYankees · 4 Comments

Here are three quick items on the day:

  • Happy Birthday to Mariano Rivera, who is officially 40 years old.
  • Per MLBTR, Xavier Nady might be Matt Holliday insurance for the Cardinals.
  • Steve at WW thinks the Yankees should make Jorge Posada their regular DH for 2010.

Back with more later…

I’m not sure if I like the Posada as an everyday DH idea and unless we got a better starting C I am completely against it! Making Posada the DH and having Cervelli’s bat in the game everyday doesn’t really make you that much better. In fact I would say it makes you worse than having Matsui DH and Posada at catcher even with his D because at this point Jorge’s bat isn’t really that of an everyday DH type guy. Matsui hits for more power at this point.

So if we don’t bring back Damon or Matsui and make Posada the everyday DH then we have a pretty weak lineup towards the end don’t we? Swisher, Melky, Gardner and Cervelli in the last 4 spots everyday… I don’t think that will work!

    Jeter, SS
    Cano, 2B
    Tex, 1B
    Arod, 3B
    Posada, DH
    Swisher, RF
    Melky, LF/Cameron, CF
    Gardner, CF/Melky, LF
    Cervelli, C

    OR

    Jeter, SS
    Cano, 2B
    Tex, 1B
    Arod, 3B
    Matsui, DH
    Posada, C
    Swisher, RF
    Melky, LF/Cameron, CF
    Gardner, CF/ Melky, LF

You still end up with Swisher, Melky and Gardner at the end but at least you don’t finish with Cervelli everyday. Now obviously if you bring in Cameron to play CF then you move Melky to LF and then the lineup is actually not that weak at the end because you have back to back 20+ HR guys with Swisher and Cameron and then Melky.

Jorge’s value is because he is probably the second best hitting catcher in the league. He has always been poor defensively, and obviously they can win the WS with his awful defense behind the plate.

Now if they want to have him catch 100 or so games, and DH him 25-30 more to keep his bat in the lineup, that’s cool. In fact, if you have a LHH DH it works out perfectly as Jorge can DH against tough LHP when you would likely sit that lefty DH anyways. That would also give them a decent looks at Cervelli to see if he has a future with the team or maybe becomes trade fodder if Jesus and Romine are ready by 2012.

That is the idea I am most comfortable with ted, Cervelli can catch 20 or 30 games without effecting our lineup and his D will even strengthen the team like with Molina behind the plate although Frankie probably has a better bat next year than Molina ever did with us.

I doubt Frankie will ever have trade value, he is nothing more than a career backup in the mold of Jose Molina with a slightly better bat, however Molina was known as one of the best defensive and game calling/pitch framing catchers in the league and Frankie hasn’t built up a name like that. Molina had no trade value because of his status as a backup and I think Cervelli will be the same, he is faster than Jose and he brings more energy but he isn’t just going to develop a bat that can catch 100 games.
