The following is a WAR comparison between Mark Teixeira and Matt Holliday, featuring values from 2005-09.

Interesting stuff, really. According to FanGraphs’ WAR data, Matt Holliday has been worth more wins above replacement, over the last 5 years, than Mark Teixeira. Now, this is not a post that is meant to slight Teixeira in relation to Holliday, instead it’s meant to highlight the skills — offensive and defensive — employed by the left fielder. For those quick to dismiss his nuanced abilities, this brief table should function as a reminder of his talent. And, although we can scrutinize the content and its formulation featured in the table (e.g., UZR’s influence, Coors Field’s influence, etc.), in the end, I think we have to give credit where credit is due and Holliday definitely deserves some recognition. Despite what some people may say — for instance, that “he’s not a superstar” — Matt Holliday is a very good ballplayer.

I agree with the Holliday part, but Tex’s numbers in D are a little lower since judging 1B defense isn’t too one of UZR’s strengths.
