Cashman’s first priority is Pettitte

According to Pete Caldera of the Bergen Record, after wrapping up their organizational meetings and mulling over possible budget decisions for 2010, the Yankees’ first priority this winter is to resign the lefty, Andy Pettitte.
With uncertainty surrounding the latter portion of the team’s starting rotation, the Yankees must attempt to bring Pettitte back quickly, for the move would work towards fortifying the pitching staff and it would subsequently alleviate the pressure placed on Brian Cashman’s shoulders to acquire Roy Halladay or sign John Lackey. Pettitte’s return (likely) or retirement (unlikely) would also influence the roles of Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes next season. For instance, if he does return, the Yankees could be more willing to turn to Hughes and Chamberlain for the final two rotation spots. If he doesn’t, however, then the Yankees could offer either pitcher for Roy Halladay in a trade with Toronto. Thus, Pettitte is an important piece to the team’s puzzle.
Therefore, it’s essential for the Yankees to resolve Pettitte’s free agency as soon as possible. Cashman must be able to dabble in the trade or free agent market while knowing exactly what the team’s needs are and he won’t be able to do that until the Pettitte’s open-ended situation comes to a close.
