Florida makes Aroldis Chapman an offer

December 20, 2009, 8:00 pm by iYankees · 7 Comments

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Florida Marlins have offered lefty Aroldis Chapman a 5-year deal “in the $13 million range.” The Fish must have been impressed by the southpaw’s recent 10-minute workout for interested teams in Houston. Chapman seems to have alleviated many concerns during that bullpen session.

The last reported proposal for Chapman was from the Red Sox. Boston had offered the Cuban prospect a deal worth $15.5 million while he was still with agent Edwin Mejia. There is no word yet, however, on whether or not that particular offer still stands after Chapman joined the Hendricks brothers, who were not accepting any offers until last week.

It looks like the winning bid for Chapman will approach at least $20 million. It probably won’t go much further, though.

If all the offers are going to remain this low how can the Yankees not win this bidding war? Boston’s at 15, Florida is at 13… We could sit back and end up with him for 18-20 million over 5 years and with the value of pitching in the MLB today he could make it worth 5+ million as a reliever or starter easy.
