Here are a few quick news items on the evening:

- Jon Heyman says the Yanks “definitely” talked to Chicago about Carlos Zambrano prior to the Vazquez deal.
- Mark Feinsand examines the team’s payroll and wonders if what we currently see is what we’ll get in 2010.
- Bryan Hoch says that Hal Steinbrenner will need “good reason” to extend the Yankees’ winter budget.
The Yankees don’t have a set left fielder, so that seems like a “good reason,” no?
