Quick Bits: Cashman, Chapman, Winter Classic, Nick Johnson

January 7, 2010, 9:00 am by iYankees · 7 Comments

Here are a few items on the morning:

  • Yesterday, Chad Jennings spoke to Brian Cashman, who didn’t offer much in the way of new information.
  • K. Rosenthal says the Angels are “trying like crazy” to sign Kendry Morales’ fellow defector, Aroldis Chapman.
  • As of now, despite the Yankees’ wishes, it looks like there won’t be a Winter Classic at Yankee Stadium in 2011.
  • Joe over at River Ave Blues takes a look at Nick Johnson’s injury history, providing more context than I did.

Enjoy the bits with your coffee. Back with more later.

The Yankees should sign Chapman no matter the cost. The Yankees can afford to take a gamble as they have the best attendance and best revenue. If you look at 2001 and 2009, they had trouble developing pitching prospects from the minors. That’s and steroid use by Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz is why the Red Sox got the jump on them. They also have Mariano Rivera to help get Chapman accustomed to not only the American culture but the language. This is a must sign for the Yankees.

Biggest concern about Johnson is his wrist injury and his 8 hrs last year. I hope it’s better so the Yankees can shoot for the most by a team in a season which I think is held by Seattle in the late 90s. 260 something.
