Poll: Josh Beckett or Cliff Lee?

February 8, 2010, 10:15 pm by iYankees · 11 Comments

Over the weekend, we learned that the Red Sox might not retain Josh Beckett once he enters free agency after the 2010 season. If this is the case and, assuming the Yankees intend on exploring the free agent market for starting pitching next winter, who do you think they will chase? Will it be Josh Beckett or Cliff Lee? Beckett has a better track record and is two years younger than the left-handed Lee, but it’s tough to argue with Lee’s numbers since 2007.

  1. I would think that they would rather have Lee. He seems like less of an injury risk and they wouldn’t have to give a draft pick to the Red Sox. I think that if did go after Beckett, it would be after pursuing Lee. It is possible that they add both.

well we would def need someone to replace Andy. I’m pretty sure this is his last year. How is that kid doing in the minors that throws right and left handed? I hope he comes up and confuses the crap out of everyone.

Lee has been dominating over the last 2 seasons and despite being 2 yrs older than Beckett he has less mileage on his arm. He will team with his best friend CC to form the best tandem of lefties in MLB. If Joba & Hughes can hold down the back of the rotation, the Yanks will have plenty of cash to go after Lee.
    CC / Lee / Burnett / Joba / Hughes ?

FishJ a look at the numbers bears you out.
      Career stats:
      BECKETT:IP=1406,W+L=106+68,FIP=360
      CLIFLEE:IP=1196,W+L=90+52,FIP=398
      Last 2 years:
      BECKETT:IP=386,W+L=29+16,K/9=8.64,HR/9=1.00,WHIP=1.19,FIP=3.28,WAR=10.3
      CLIFLEE:IP=455,W+L=36+16,K/9=6.94,HR/9=0.51,WHIP=1.18,FIP=3.62,WAR=13.7
Both guys are very good, but for the Yanks if Andy retires Lee would be the better replacement in Yankee stadium.I also wouldn’t rule out Javy if he has a stong 2010 season.CC,AJ,LEE,JAVY,JOBA/HUGHES

This is when I start to wonder whether Burnett might get traded in a couple of years. He probably won’t get traded though, unless part of his salary is picked up.

I think you’d have to give serious consideration to either if they’re available.

Those who think we should exclusively develop from within, see 2009 World Series Champs (CC, AJ). Now I don’t think we should exclusively sign free agents either, but we should keep an open mind and all options open.
