Quick Bits: Posada, Park, A-Rod

February 28, 2010, 7:15 pm by iYankees · 8 Comments

Here are a few quick items on the evening:

  • Jorge Posada on retiring: “They are going to really have to rip [the uniform] off me.”
  • Chan Ho Park is honored to be on the Yankees and hopes to win a WS ring this season.
  • Speaking of Park, the Yankees consider today to be “Day 1″ of Spring Training for him
  • Alex Rodriguez is a pretty sneaky dude, baiting Phil Hughes during batting practice.

I wonder how often A-Rod might intentionally overswing at a fastball during an at-bat in order to coax another one out of a pitcher that he then unloads on. It is a clever and daring maneuver. That reminds me of an incident from last July, in which Ichiro swung wildly at a Scott Downs curveball on the outer edge of the plate during an 0-1 Toronto-Seattle game with the bases loaded, two out, and an 0-1 count in the 9th inning. David Aardsma, Seattle’s closer, actually suggested to reporters afterward that Ichiro had purposefully overswung at the pitch to convince Downs to throw him another curveball, which he did. Ichiro then looped the 0-2 curve into shallow center for the first walk-off hit of his career.

As if you needed another reason to like Ichiro…

Personally, I soured on Ichiro when he did the crotch chop after hitting the walk-off against Mo. I look forward to the Yankees eliminating them in the playoffs.

    Teddy B. , Chris,
Back in the 80s and early 90s, Japanese movie director/ comedian Beat Takeshi used to do a wildly popular comedy routine were he would yell “Comaneci!” and do what he thought was the Nadia Comaneci’s leotard “pose” where hands are thrust diagonally like the bottoms of a gymnast’s one-piece leotard. Now, it has become an exercise routine on Japanese TV . Ichiro probably did it to be funny to his fellow Japanese. He deserves a knockdown pitch from AJ next time we see him.

Yes, Patrick it’s a rare species of wasps – called the “shoulda woulda coulda beenayank” this is the rare Byrnes Bug. It shines for 2 seasons, then has trouble with it’s calves, nosedives and crashes into a wall. If you are stung by it , you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, throw your pillow, and do a somersault out your bedroom window.
