Why was Gardner playing so shallow? I know he likes to play a shallow OF but he should have been a little deeper and closer to the gap vs a gap hitter like Abreu.

And Swisher needs to make that catch on Hunter’s ball.

AJ is meat tonight. Needs to get the ball down and throw the change a little. On days like today when he can’t get his curve near the plate he has to throw the change. Now that it’s tied 4-4, I hope Joe doesn’t give him too long of a leash.

  14. FISHjam says:

Once again, WHY take Robertson out of the game. Faced one batter and struck him out but Girardi replaces him with righty Joba against 2 lefties. If you are going to take him out, go with Marte.

Joba gives up a bullet base hit by Matsui and a 2-run bomb by Morales. BTW, Morales is 5 for 7 against Joba with 3 HRs. Great managing Joe

Ridiculous – the more relievers you go to the more chance you will find one that doesn’t have his stuff that night. Robertson had some heat tonight 94mph. Keep him in!

    • FISHjam says:

I totally agree Twasp. I say that all the time. Relievers can be very sporadic. They may be able to pitch every day but many days they won’t have their good stuff. When you bring one in who shows he’s on that day, stick with him. Girardi has been using Robertson for no more than 1 or 2 batters almost every outing this year. I don’t understand. He blew Hunter away.

Joba just got lucky to only give up 2 runs that inning. EVERY single ball was hit hard that inning including the 3 outs.

Completely agree…Girardi suffers from the same affliction that Torre did. Use of the bullpen is something the Yankees haven’t really gotten right in a long time (excluding Mo, of course).

  16. FISHjam says:

Actually Morales is a switch hitter but he’s much better as a lefty hitter. Hit .309 with 30 HRs vs righties last yr. Would have been the time to bring in Marte vs Matsui and Morales. Otherwise he shouldn’t be on the team.

Gardy had a good game with a double, a walk and a SB but his failure to get the bunt down in the 6th really hurt. He gets the bunt down there, we would have scored at least 1 run that inning and took the lead.

Fish you made a comment to me awile back that Gardy needs to get more aggressive. You were right. The kid has to start believing he belongs. That belief comes from 2 places, himself and his manager. The talent is there to be a gold glove defender a Ricky Henderson type base stealer and a Figgins comp with the bat.But if Joe doesn’t support him and he doesn’t believe it he will not play to his vast potential.Gardy looks to me like he’s playing cautiously trying not to make a mistake instead of playing aggressively with swagger and pushing the envelope.A player like Gardy has to play the game like a Pedroia always giving 110%,Guys like Cano or Arod can play at what appears to be a slower speed because they slow the game down with their emmense talent.
Gardner is very close to becoming an everyday player capable of being an allstar, but if he doesn’t start to believe it he will be a 4th OF FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE.

You are right as usual, BP…but in order for Gardner to play with confidence, he has to have the support of the team, so he isn’t constantly looking over his shoulder.

NJ and Tex are a black hole in the lineup. Its bad to have 2 guys back to back that are slumping that bad and to make it worse their 2 and 3.Rooster when’s your buddy Joe gonna do something.
Watching Matsui hit cleanup and NJ try to hit 2nd you have to wonder “WTF” was Cashman thinking???????????????????????

Very true, BP. Time to juggle the lineup a little.

Ernie where are you? You said as did I that NJ would have trouble in the 2 hole because of his nature as a hitter to be patient and that pitchers would attack him taking him away from his strength.Thats exactly what we are seeing.

Now there’s whispers that he’s not comfortable DHing.Last night Joe pinch hit for him in the 9th.

Sorry BP…I had to get off the site for a few minutes…and I have to bail again very soon. But I answered your post about lineup juggling below.

NJ needs to swing the bat, period. He’s a DH, not a DBB. Patience at the plate is a virtue, but theoretically the reason for plate patience is to get your pitch to hit. If you are being attacked by opposing pitchers and you don’t get the bat off your shoulders, you will not be an effective hitter. As you know, I am not one of those folks who is satisfied with our DH having 16 walks, but hitting .170 with no slugging potential.

CashMan bought into the sabermetric philosophy. He also has little emotion, he is a beancounter after all. His understanding of the mental side of the game is his major shortcoming. Guys like Pavano, Kevin Brown, Randy J…..didn’t have the mental toughness to withstand the bright lights of Broadway. Damon and Matsui did. Nicky J is as tough as his at-bat song.

Ernie what would you do to juggle the lineup?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

    • Ernie says:

I might try a few things, not necessarily all at the same time. I don’t consider any of these permanent moves (except getting NJ out of the 2-hole):

      - Sit Tex a game or two, or move him lower in the order. Give NJ a little time at first, but hit him lower in the order.

      - hit Granderson/Swisher 2, depending on righty/lefty

      - try Gardner in the 1 or 2 hole a game or two – ignite a little offense from that slot, maybe unsettle the defense a little.

      - Consider Cano in the 3-hole, given his success higher in the order, with Posada in the 5 hole.

      You, BP?

If I may…BP seems to have left the building….

Ernie I think you have a fine line-up but, what about Jeter? Maybe let him hit #1 and Gardner #2 with CG/Swisher #3?

        • Ernie says:

          Hi Ken…

Jeter is always 1 or 2. If you give Gardy a shot at leadoff, you put Jeter at no. 2. If you keep Gardy 9. you hit Jeter 1 and Swish/Granderson 2. Either way, I think you have a more dynamic top of the lineup. In the first scenario, the obvious question is: can Gardy get himself on base enough, because you know Jeter can handle no. 2. In the second scenario, the question is: can Swish/Granderson give you the quality AB’s you need when they are challenged…that is the unknown.

      • Ballpark says:

Ernie all good moves that could help ignite the O and help get some guys going. I’ll throw out some ideas to consider.

1-I think the 1st move is split up NJ and Tex that whole is getting bigger.Get NJ out of the 2 hole for starters.Leave Tex 3 because we need him to get going and hitting in front of Arod is the best place to get a guy out of a slump.
2- The question is who to bat 2nd?
a-Granderson/Swisher,could be good short term and long term.
b-Jeter and have Gardy leadoff.short term jump start.
3-Cervelli should catch more and Posada’s bat should stay in the lineup and DH MORE,putting NJ on the bench a coulpe of times a week. The move would make us better on D and help keep Posada fresh.
4-If after another 15 to 20 games Tex doesn’t break out of his slump, then drastic measures would be called for but lets not go there yet.Tex will break out soon and will carry the team for along time.

    • Ernie says:

      Sorry, BP…gotta run…

I think whoever you put in the 2-hole – even temporarily – needs to be someone who is a contact hitter who can withstand being challenged early in the count, because pitchers will try to get ahead with Tex and A-Rod following. If you temp. had Cano and A-Rod following the 2-hole, that 2-hole hitter will see great pitches to hit, especailly early in the count. That might lead me to suggest Jeter in the 2-hole for a while, who likes to hit early in the count.

Can talk more later…gotta split. See you.
