Morning Bits: Recap, Gardner, Strasburg

Here are a few news items on the morning:

  • Thanks to Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira, and Phil Hughes, the Yankees beat Baltimore, 12-7.
  • Brett Gardner was pulled from yesterday’s game (8th inning) with minor soreness in his left thumb.
  • The soreness isn’t considered serious. Gardner has dealt with it since breaking the thumb last year.
  • And, finally, a non-Yankee note—touted prospect Stephen Strasburg made his debut last night.

Strasburg struck out 14 over 7 innings and walked none, which is actually a first for a starting pitcher making his debut. Strasburg featured a fastball that averaged 97.5 mph and he touched 100-101 mph a few times last night. The 21-year old certainly delivered on his billing and, as a result, he seems to be invigorating the entire Nationals organization.
