Thanks to Mark Teixeira’s grandslam and a brilliant outing by their ace lefty, CC Sabathia (8,6) – 8 IP 4 H 0 ER 2 BB 6 K – the Yankees beat Johan Santana and the Mets today, 4-0. With the win, the Yankees now sit alone atop the American League East for the first time since April 21. The Rays trail by a game while the Sawx are 1.5 games out.

Good week for C.C. beating Halladay and Santana when we really needed him to come through. Getting him pitching well gives us a great top 3 to match up with anyone in CC, Andy & Phil. Javy’s pitching well but needs to prove himself against a top offense to fully gain trust. AJ continues to be inconsistent.

AJ might be a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but when he is on, he has ace-type stuff. (see: Game 2 of the 2009 World Series)

The starters have covered up our weaknesses in the bullpen and bench. We need to find out if anyone in the minors can help so Cashman knows what to go after at the trade deadline.
What more to Albaladejo and Royce Ring have to prove in AAA?
- Alba is dominating with 23 saves/1.10 ERA /.139 BAA/ 44 Ks in 32ip/ 0.83 whip
- Ring has similar #s in 25g /1.50 ERA / .176 BAA / 21 Ks in 24ip/ 0.96 whip
Ivan Nova (5-2 3.42) would also be better than some of the guys in our current bullpen.
In another 5 wks, relief arms will become available in trade so let’s use our internal options now. Maybe in late July guys like Evan Meek, Sean Marshall, Tom Gorzelany, Matt Capps, Leo Nunez, Brandon League, David Aardsma, Craig Breslow, Brad Ziegler, JJ Putz, Matt Thornton, etc. become available.

I agree the BP has been a weakness. I would rather they attempt to fix it internally, since almost all relievers are so up and down that trading for one doesn’t mean that reliever won’t also be inconsistent.
On the bench, other than say adding a bat with pop who could play a corner OF spot, I don’t see what they would really do. Pena is a defensive wizard, so him as the UIF is perfectly fine. Cervelli is probably the best BUC in baseball.

Fish I fully agree with you as there is no harm in trying internal options first.

It’s nice to have they best record in baseball. It’s not so nice that the second and third best records in baseball are in their division and breathing down their neck.

Also, anyone still want to go back in time and do that Hughes + IPK + Marquez + AJax for Johan deal?
I mean, they would have gotten the right to extend Johan, and thus likely not sign CC. They also likely wouldn’t have been able to trade for Swisher (Marquez) and Granderson (AJax/IPK).
Johan > Hughes + Swisher + Granderson + CC ???

Why even bring this up…it’s water under the bridge.

If you ever listen to Bill Simmons podcast when he brings on his Yankees fan friend, who is the epitome of an “average” fan, (who was still beating their failure to trade for Johan into the ground even AFTER they won the WS) you would know why.

So what, it still is a waste of time.

I think the only reason ppl bring it up is because cashman and the yankees were killed for not making the deal. Ppl judged the trade after a couple of months. Rational bb fans know you can not judge a trade so quickly especially when it involves elite players and big name prospects.
