Big Bits: Jeter, Girardi, Marte, Pettitte, Options, Joba, Eiland, Pitching

Fresh off of the Yankees’ end-of-the-season press conference, here are a few big items on the day:

  • Brian Cashman made it clear that he intends to re-sign Derek Jeter, calling him a “legacy” player.
  • Same goes for Mariano Rivera, who Cashman also tagged with the “legacy” title. Mo should be > $15M per.
  • Let’s not forget that Joe Girardi is also a FA. The Yanks want him back and it could be on a 3-year deal.
  • Damaso Marte had shoulder surgery over the weekend and won’t return until after the 2011 AS Break.
  • Andy Pettitte didn’t pitch in Game 2 or 6 of the ALCS because he had been battling hamstring/back woes.
  • Cashman said the Yanks likely won’t to pick up options for Lance Berkman, Kerry Wood or Nick Johnson.
  • Interesting words from Girardi yesterday–he sees Joba Chamberlain as a late-inning arm in 2011.
  • Dave Eiland won’t return to the Yankees. The team will look abroad and internally for a replacement.
  • Outside of Eiland, the team doesn’t envision any other changes to their coaching staff going in 2011.
  • Cashman will look to bolster the Yankees rotation this winter and we should see him chase Cliff Lee.

So what if his wife prefers Texas? Remember when CC used to “prefer” California?
