Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has traveled to Arkansas to meet with free-agent pitcher Cliff Lee.

Cashman was invited Tuesday by Lee’s agent, Darek Brauneker, to meet with the 32-year-old left-hander and his wife, a person familiar with the arrangements told The Associated Press yesterday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Yankees and Lee didn’t make any announcements.

Yesterday’s meeting was a “meet-and-greet” session, the person said, and an offer was not expected to be made until later.

The Yankees clearly want Lee for a number of very understandable reasons (today, SI’s Jon Heyman highlighted some of the main ones). In the end, though, contract length will be the ultimate issue, as Lee, for all of his talents, is still on the wrong side of 30. He’s a control and movement guy — those skills should age well — but, even with that in mind, do you really want to pay him past the age of 37? That’s quite an investment, to say the least.
