Turkey Bits: Hank, Jeter, Rivera

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Hope you’re all having a healthy and a happy holiday.

In case you’ve managed to pry yourself from the dinner table, here are a few quick items on the day:

  • Hank Steinbrenner doesn’t think the Yankees owe Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera “anything monetarily” after already making them “very, very rich.” To be honest, this sort of rhetoric seems excessive (Hank isn’t known for his subtlety). Still, to an extent, I agree with him. It’s just that he could have  conveyed his point differently.
  • Buster Olney of ESPN and George King of the NY Post both write that Jeter will have difficulty on the open market. There aren’t many teams willing to meet or go beyond the Yankees 3-year, $45M offer–not for a 36-year old shortstop coming off of the worst season of his career. The Yanks are holding the cards here.
  • While Jeter may have an issue securing additional offers, Mark Feinsand of the Daily News writes that Mariano Rivera will have no such problem. With that said, even with Rivera’s greatness, he’ll still be 41 this month. The Yanks should be able to bring him back, of course. His price just has to be reasonable.

That’s it for me. Enjoy the day with your family and friends. Baseball will be here tomorrow.
