V-Mart signs with the Tigers

You’ve probably heard this by now, but since it impacts the Red Sox I thought a quick post on it couldn’t hurt. The Detroit Tigers — with the help of slugger Miguel Cabrera — have signed Victor Martinez to a 4-year deal worth $50M. After having spent the last year and a half at Fenway, V-Mart will head to Comerica Park for 2011, where he’ll mainly serve as the Tigers’ new DH. He’ll also catch 2-3 times a week, according to GM Dave Dombrowski.
Even with Martinez’s defensive woes taken into account, this is a nice signing for Detroit. Last year, Detroit’s DHs produced — and I use the term loosely here — a .259/.341/.373 line while their production from the catcher’s spot was even more embarrassing at .223/.294/.330 (both of these lines were below league average). V-Mart hit .302/.351/.493 in 2010 and was worth 4 WAR. Cabrera-Martinez is a pretty daunting offensive combination.
