Quick Bits: Derek Jeter, Adrian Gonzalez

December 4, 2010, 12:49 pm by · 82 Comments

Here are a few quick — yet major — items on the day:

  • Per MLBTR, the Yankees are closing in on a 3-year, $45-51M contract with Derek Jeter. Jeter and Rivera — Rivera agreed to a new deal earlier this week — are both deferring money, which has helped to advance the negotiation process. Jeter’s new pact may also include an option (non-guaranteed) for a fourth year at $10M.
  • Also, via MLBTR, the Red Sox have traded Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo and Reymond Fuentes to the Padres for Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez, 28, hit .298/.393/.511 in 2010 and has slugged 30 or more home runs each season since 2007. When you consider that he also managed to do that while playing in Petco Park, it’s an even greater feat. This is a big win for the Sawx, as they’ve been hoping to acquire Gonzalez ever since they lost Mark Teixeira to New York. They still have to sign him to an extension, however.

Gonzalez is reportedly seeking Ryan Howard money ($125M or more). He deserves it, too.

UPDATEAccording to George King of the NY Post, Derek Jeter’s 3-year deal will be finalized later today and the deal does, indeed, include a non-guaranteed option for a fourth year.

DONE DEAL – Derek Jeter’s new deal is finalized, per MLBTR.
