Multiple innings for Mariano

November 3, 2009, 9:00 pm by iYankees · 6 Comments

Today, Joe Girardi noted that Mariano Rivera will be available for “multiple innings” in Game 6 of the World Series. After throwing 39 pitches in Game 2, Rivera has only thrown 13 since, leaving him fresh to back Andy Pettitte tomorrow night. Now, if you’re Girardi and Pettitte leaves with a one-run lead after the 6th inning, what do you do for the 7th? Do you mix and match with Marte, Joba, and perhaps Robertson, or do you go straight to Rivera (he’ll definitely go 2 innings)? Three innings is certainly a lot of work, but can you risk not going to your best in that situation?

Hopefully, against Pedro Martinez, the Yankees will score enough runs so as to avoid such a difficult decision.

If it comes down to it and Pettitte goes 6 innings and we have the lead then I go with Marte for the 7th and if he comes up against a righty I don’t think he can get our or he gets a man on in the 7th then I would turn to Robertson to get me the rest of the way through the inning and then I would use Mariano for the 2 inning saver to win the WS!

Completely unrelated but Iwamura has been traded from the Rays to the Pirates so that should count out Carl Crawford from being a FA, as I thought they will most likely pick up his option and this will clear a little more room to do so.
