After naming the top 50 prospects in the American League on Wednesday, yesterday, FanGraphs’ Marc Hulet offered that list’s counterpart, ranking the top 50 prospects in the National League, as well. Atlanta’s Jason Heyward leads the pack, of course, and a pair of former Yankee farmhands also made the list, with Arodys Vizcaino at number [...]

Yanks viewed Chapman as a luxury

January 15, 2010 by iYankees · 1 Comment

What’s a day without an Aroldis Chapman post?
From Mark Sheldon of MLB.com:
Once Chapman was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball, speculation was that the 21-year-old’s asking price might make big-market, deep-pocketed clubs favorites to acquire Chapman. But that proved to be a wrong assumption.
Many teams, such as the Red Sox and Yankees, were [...]

Quick Bits: Chapman, Gorecki, McGwire

January 12, 2010 by iYankees · 4 Comments

A few items on the morning:

According to Tyler Kepner, the Yankees never actually bid on LHP Aroldis Chapman.
For depth purposes, the Yankees have signed former Cardinals prospect, Reid Gorecki.
The great Richard Sandomir has a nice read out on Mark McGwire’s PED admission.

Interesting tidbit from the Sandomir article—former White House press secretary, Ari Fleischer, was actually [...]

Aroldis Chapman won’t settle for your $20M

January 11, 2010 by iYankees · 11 Comments

From Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated:
The Yankees seemed to lose interest in Chapman after entertaining him at Yankee Stadium in October, while the Red Sox’s pursuit lost steam after their initial $15.5 million bid several weeks ago apparently came up short. Although it couldn’t be confirmed, a story going around baseball is that, upon finding [...]

Quick Bits: Offseason, Chapman, Damon

January 11, 2010 by iYankees · 11 Comments

Here are a few items to start the day:

Bob Klapisch believes that the Red Sox had a better offseason than the Yankees (it’s debatable).
With the Reds landing Aroldis Chapman, David Pinto believes that a draft system is unnecessary.
Aubrey Huff has agreed to a deal with the SF Giants and will presumably play first base for [...]

Via MLBTR, from Jeff Passan (Yahoo! Sports) we learn that Aroldis Chapman has signed a 5-year, $30 million deal with an NL Central club. Passan speculates that the Reds, who have never really been linked to Chapman outside of today, might be the team, as Chapman is actually on a flight to Cincinnati as we [...]

Quick Bits: Chapman, Bench, Hairston

January 9, 2010 by iYankees · Leave a Comment

Here are three quick items on the day:

After being the first to bid on Aroldis Chapman, the BoSox might be out of the hunt.
Chad Jennings offers a list of utility infielders that could possibly help the Yankees’ bench.
Speaking of utility IFs, the Padres have $5-8M to spend and $2-3M could go to Jerry Hairston Jr.

If [...]

January 8, 2010 by iYankees · Leave a Comment

Three quick items on the afternoon:

Moshe at TYU has a post up in which he wonders who was the better prospect, Joba or Hughes.
Joe of River Ave Blues has an excellent post out outlining some of the best 3-4 combos in the game.
Somewhat random, sure, but the Nationals are interested in former San Fran Giant, [...]

Yanks in or out on Chapman?

January 7, 2010 by iYankees · 27 Comments

Yesterday, ESPN’s Buster Olney tweeted that, along with the Mets, the Yankees were out of the Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes, with Olney citing a general front office concern as to whether or not Chapman was better suited to serve as a reliever or a starter (spending $20 million or more on an eventual bullpen cog seemed [...]

Quick Bits: Cashman, Chapman, Winter Classic, Nick Johnson

January 7, 2010 by iYankees · 7 Comments

Here are a few items on the morning:

Yesterday, Chad Jennings spoke to Brian Cashman, who didn’t offer much in the way of new information.
K. Rosenthal says the Angels are “trying like crazy” to sign Kendry Morales’ fellow defector, Aroldis Chapman.
As of now, despite the Yankees’ wishes, it looks like there won’t be a Winter Classic [...]

Yanks won’t sign Chapman

January 6, 2010 by iYankees · 4 Comments

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney (props to RAB), the Yankees are not in on Aroldis Chapman as the bidding is expected to reach $20 million for his services. Apparently, some clubs — Olney speaks in generalities here (it’s Twitter, mind you), but I would presume that he is referring to the Yankees, at least in [...]

Chapman nearing a decision

January 6, 2010 by iYankees · 3 Comments

Maybe Ken Rosenthal’s recent prediction will become a reality?
According to the Sun Sentinel (props to MLBTR), which spoke to “an American League source following the situation,” the Florida Marlins are “still in the game” with regards to their pursuit of prize Cuban left-hander, Aroldis Chapman, and have supposedly “increased their initial $13 million offer.” The [...]
