After a long weekend, here are a few quick items on the morning: SI‘s Jon Heyman writes that the Yankees could up their offer for Derek Jeter to 3-years and $50M. Believe it or not, but the Yomiuri Giants reportedly paid the Yankees $1.2M for Jonathan Albaladejo. On the 24th, Brian Cashman visited A.J. Burnett [...]

Forget $45M, Jeter wants $150M

November 26, 2010 by · 20 Comments

Here’s an interesting bit of information from Bill Madden of the Daily News – props to Joe P. over at RAB – that just might explain why the Yankees have engaged in a media battle with Derek Jeter and his agent Casey Close: Throughout this process, Close and Jeter have never revealed what they’re actually [...]

With Jeter, Cashman wants a fair contract

November 24, 2010 by · 36 Comments

Derek Jeter’s agent Casey Close recently characterized the Yankees’ handling of his client’s contract negotiations as “baffling.” Well, Casey–I think GM Brian Cashman disagrees with you. Also, he believes the reported 3-year deal worth $45M is fair. Via Wallace Matthews of ESPN: “We’ve made an offer and we hope they strongly consider it,” Cashman said. [...]

Fresh off of the Yankees’ end-of-the-season press conference, here are a few big items on the day: Brian Cashman made it clear that he intends to re-sign Derek Jeter, calling him a “legacy” player. Same goes for Mariano Rivera, who Cashman also tagged with the “legacy” title. Mo should be > $15M per. Let’s not [...]

Yanks opt for 4-man rotation

October 11, 2010 by · 3 Comments

Via Ben Shpigel of the NY Times: Although the Yankees will not meet until Tuesday to discuss their roster for the American League Championship Series, General Manager Brian Cashman said on Monday that they would go with a four-man rotation. That means A. J. Burnett, whose poor performance in the regular season cost him a [...]

Letting Damon and Matsui walk — maybe it was for the best?

June 23, 2010 by · 11 Comments

On the season, former Yankee turned Tiger, Johnny Damon, is currently hitting .274/.363/.402. After hitting 24 home runs in 2009, a year later, Damon has only swatted 3 homers and is on pace for less than 10 total. Meanwhile, Hideki Matsui, outfielder/designated hitter for the Angels, is batting an anemic .261/.332/.424 with 9 homers. Though [...]

A.J. Burnett not worth $16.5M per year

June 22, 2010 by · 9 Comments

Though I have discussed this at length in a number of previous posts, after last night’s brutal start, I have to say it once more–A.J. Burnett is not and and was not going to be worth $16.5M, which is what he currently collects from the Yankees each season. Brian Cashman simply overpaid him when he [...]

Checking in on Carl Pavano

June 7, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Believe it or not, but, loathed former Yankee, Carl Pavano, is one of the more effective pitchers in the American League. On the season, he has posted a 4.11 ERA—that’s with an impressive 3.82 FIP and 3.74 xFIP, leaving his worth at a more than respectable mark of 1.2 WAR. Essentially, in Minnesota, Pavano is [...]

Yanks looking for outfield help?

May 28, 2010 by · 9 Comments

Given the assortment of injuries the Yankees have had to deal with, particularly to their outfield (Granderson, Swisher), and the underwhelming performances provided by bench players like Randy Winn, Brian Cashman might be in the market for some outfield help. According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, “Yankees scouts have begun lightly targeting versatile outfield bats who [...]

May 21, 2010 by · 32 Comments

Via Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger: Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson thinks he could be back in about a week, which would push his comeback from a strained groin slightly ahead of schedule. Granderson, who strained his groin while running the bases on May 1, has progressed to taking full batting practice. But even if [...]

Brian Cashman’s Marte mistake

May 17, 2010 by · 16 Comments

Did you know that Damaso Marte, the left-hander that owns a 6.64 ERA over just 39 1/3 innings since joining the Yankees in 2008, will receive at least $8.25M more from them (in addition to the $3.75M he received in 2009) through 2012? That’s right—$8.25M. He is owed $4M this season, $4M next season, and, [...]
