April 18, 2010 by · 2 Comments

Via Tyler Kepner of the NY Times: With the Yankees headed to Oakland this week, Manager Joe Girardi is bringing a ring for Chad Gaudin and Edwar Ramirez, the former Yankees right-handers who now pitch for the Athletics. General Manager Brian Cashman has also sent rings to Brian Bruney and Chien-Ming Wang of the Nationals [...]

Quick Bits: CC, Johnson, Pinstripe Bowl, Cervelli, Matias, A-Rod, Jeter

March 9, 2010 by · 20 Comments

Here are a few quick items on the day: CC Sabathia looked poor today against the Pirates, giving up 5 ER over 2 1/3 IP. The Yanks lost, 12-7. On a happier note, a pain-free Nick Johnson looked great at the plate, going 2-for-2 with 2 home runs. Yankee Stadium is set to host a [...]

Cano “better off” will Melky gone?

February 28, 2010 by · 11 Comments

Here’s an interesting bit of text via Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record: Yankee hitting instructor Kevin Long spoke for the franchise when he said, “We all want to see Robbie get to the next level. It’s definitely time, and he knows it.” Cano seems ready for the challenge, showing up at 7 a.m. this [...]

Missing Melky

February 15, 2010 by · 10 Comments

Here’s Dave Cameron of FanGraphs, offering an “optimistic” outlook for Melky Cabrera‘s 2010 prospects. He’s been around long enough that its easy to forget that he’s just 25 years old. He gets labeled as a tweener, because he’s not a great defensive CF or a great offensive LF, but guys like this are often better [...]

Give Javier Vazquez a chance

February 5, 2010 by · 37 Comments

“Three days of rest” was a common phrase for me last October, and into November, as the Yankees were forced to employ a thin three-man rotation throughout the postseason, due to the lack of a clear fourth option (well, there were several options, however, such options were far from confidence inspiring). This winter, in order [...]

Quick Bits: Granderson, Damon, Prospects

January 25, 2010 by · 2 Comments

Here are a few quick items on the day: Curtis Granderson says that he is willing to play left field in 2010. Granderson also hopes to see Johnny Damon stick around this season. Frankie Piliere provides us with his top 100 prospects of 2010 list. Piliere ranks Jesus Montero as the 5th best prospect in [...]

Melky avoids arbitration with Atlanta

January 14, 2010 by · 4 Comments

From ESPN: Atlanta Braves outfielder Melky Cabrera avoided salary arbitration and accepted a one year offer worth $3.1 million from the club, sources familiar with the situation told ESPNdeportes.com. If the Braves get Damon, I would expect Melky to be on the move.

Melky on the move (again)?

December 28, 2009 by · 2 Comments

According to Dave O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves could choose to move the recently acquired Melky Cabrera before he ever gets to play a game for Atlanta. “The Braves could use Cabrera or another outfielder in a trade for Uggla or another slugger,” notes O’Brien, as he attempts to explain Atlanta’s thought process [...]

Quick Bits: Melky, DeRosa, Left Field

December 23, 2009 by · 12 Comments

Here are three quick items on the day: Melky Cabera via spokesperson on being traded from NY: “I’m going to miss it dearly.” SI’s Jon Heyman says that Mark DeRosa is sitting on a 2-year, $12M deal from the Giants. That’s likely too rich for the Yankees, who are looking to spend only $4M or [...]

That Vazquez guy is pretty good…

December 22, 2009 by · 8 Comments

Here are the top starting pitcher WAR totals over the past three seasons, via FanGraphs: Javier Vazquez sits among some pretty valuable starters, huh? That speaks to his talent. Despite what may have happened in the past, the Yankees acquired a very good arm today. Photo by the AP

Gardner the regular?

December 22, 2009 by · 16 Comments

Although Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports has guaranteed that the Yankees’ “outfield next season will not be Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher and Brett Gardner,” what if Rosenthal is mistaken and the Yankees do, indeed, decide to stick with that particular configuration for financial reasons? As stated by Newsday’s Ken Davidoff, the Yankees “are hellbent on [...]

No Holliday this holiday season

December 22, 2009 by · 22 Comments

During today’s Javier Vazquez press conference, due to existing financial limitations and the added burden of the $11.5 million Vazquez is owed in 2010 (the Yankees also sent $500k to Atlanta in the deal), GM Brian Cashman all but ruled out adding Matt Holliday (and Jason Bay), the market’s premier free agent outfielder, this winter [...]

Vazquez Bits: Trade Fallout

December 22, 2009 by · 25 Comments

Here are some items related to the Javier Vazquez trade, which has been officially announced: The Yankees felt they could spend money on a SP or a LF and felt that spending on the rotation was best. The Yankees ultimately reacquired Vazquez after checking in on both Carlos Zambrano and Aaron Harang. The Yankees were [...]

Yanks acquire Javier Vazquez

December 22, 2009 by · 27 Comments

After much speculation, the undisclosed starter has been revealed. According to Tyler Kepner, the Yankees have acquired former Yankee, right-hander Javier Vazquez for Melky Cabrera, plus prospects Michael Dunn and Arodys Vizcaino (the Yankees will also receive lefty reliever Boone Logan in the deal). Vazquez, 33, last pitched for the Yankees in 2004 (his only [...]

Please, no more Lowe talk

December 20, 2009 by · 5 Comments

In his latest, Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports briefly wonders whether or not the Yankees would be open to acquiring Derek Lowe from Atlanta. The Braves, with an arm surplus, are actively shopping the 37-year old, according to multiple reports (and he’s not particularly happy about it). “Would the Braves take Melky Cabrera and a [...]
