Burnett out of the rotation

October 5, 2010 by · 20 Comments

Via George King of the NY Post: With the Yankees opting to use a three-man rotation against the Twins in the AL Division Series, CC Sabathia’s broad shoulders and valuable left arm are about to get leaned on. Because of A.J. Burnett’s miserable season, the Yankees will use Sabathia, Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes in [...]

Remember the Joba Rules? Well, be prepared for the Hughes Rules: The Yankees will soon settle on a plan that will give starter Phil Hughes extra days off so that he will be able to stay within the innings and pitch limits the team has planned for him this season, according to a published report. Phil Hughes, an early Cy Young contender?

May 17, 2010 by · 3 Comments

Cliff Corcoran of Sports Illustrated has an interesting writeup out today documenting the “early favorites” for this season’s Cy Young Awards (American League and National). In his piece, Corcoran’s top AL contender for the honor is none other than the young Phil Hughes, although, as Corcoran himself suggests, a regression is likely in store for [...]

Phil Hughes’ fastball confidence remains

May 10, 2010 by · 12 Comments

Here’s something I wrote regarding Phil Hughes back in early February: In 2009, working primarily as Mariano Rivera’s setup man, Hughes’ fastball averaged 93.7 mph. In 2008, as a starter, Hughes’ velocity averaged nearly 3 mph less at 91.2 mph. The noticeable uptick in velocity can help to explain the changes in Hughes’ demeanor from [...]

Here are a few early morning items following yesterday’s game against Boston: Thanks to Nick Swisher and Phil Hughes, the Yankees beat the Red Sox last night, 10-3. Are there tough times ahead for the Yankees’ fifth starter, Phil Hughes? Well, not exactly, however, given a few of his underlying numbers on the season, it does seem as though Hughes is bound to regress a bit going forward. For example, Hughes currently sports a 1.44 ERA, but his FIP is 3.13 (xFIP at [...]
