June 21, 2010 by Chris H. · 1 Comment

Here are a few quick items – all from Chad Jennings – on the evening:

Chad Moeller isn’t currently listed on the Yankees’ bench, meaning Colin Curtis is taking his place.
The Hughes Rules are finally beginning to come into focus a bit as Hughes’ next start will be skipped.

Such a move was inevitable, as the Yankees [...]

Shedding light on the Hughes Rules

June 2, 2010 by iYankees · 20 Comments

Remember the Joba Rules? Well, be prepared for the Hughes Rules:
The Yankees will soon settle on a plan that will give starter Phil Hughes extra days off so that he will be able to stay within the innings and pitch limits the team has planned for him this season, according to a published report.
The plan, [...]

Phil Hughes, an early Cy Young contender?

May 17, 2010 by iYankees · 3 Comments

Cliff Corcoran of Sports Illustrated has an interesting writeup out today documenting the “early favorites” for this season’s Cy Young Awards (American League and National). In his piece, Corcoran’s top AL contender for the honor is none other than the young Phil Hughes, although, as Corcoran himself suggests, a regression is likely in store for [...]

Phil Hughes’ fastball confidence remains

May 10, 2010 by iYankees · 12 Comments

Here’s something I wrote regarding Phil Hughes back in early February:
In 2009, working primarily as Mariano Rivera’s setup man, Hughes’ fastball averaged 93.7 mph. In 2008, as a starter, Hughes’ velocity averaged nearly 3 mph less at 91.2 mph. The noticeable uptick in velocity can help to explain the changes in Hughes’ demeanor from 2008 [...]

Morning Bits: Recap, Cano, Johnson, Thames

May 8, 2010 by iYankees · 17 Comments

Here are a few early morning items following yesterday’s game against Boston:

Thanks to Nick Swisher and Phil Hughes, the Yankees beat the Red Sox last night, 10-3.
Robinson Cano took a Josh Beckett fastball off of his knee. He probably won’t play today.
Nick Johnson left last night’s game with a sore right wrist. He’s probably headed [...]

Regression in Phil Hughes’ future?

May 4, 2010 by iYankees · 18 Comments

Are there tough times ahead for the Yankees’ fifth starter, Phil Hughes?
Well, not exactly, however, given a few of his underlying numbers on the season, it does seem as though Hughes is bound to regress a bit going forward. For example, Hughes currently sports a 1.44 ERA, but his FIP is 3.13 (xFIP at 4.24). [...]

Hughes maturing with each start

April 28, 2010 by iYankees · 18 Comments

Here’s an interesting bit regarding last night’s game via Marc Carig (Star-Ledger):
But Hughes, the losing pitcher in the Yankees’ 5-4 defeat to the Orioles, still managed to allow only one run in 5 2/3 innings. So how did he do it, despite walking four and admitting he had no feel for his stuff?
Part of it [...]

Morning Bits: Hughes, Johnson, Romanski

April 22, 2010 by iYankees · 42 Comments

Here are a few quick items on the morning:

In his second start of the season, Phil Hughes nearly no-hit the Oakland A’s.
Although Nick Johnson is only hitting .136, his .406 OBP still pleases the Yankees.
A minor minor-league note—the Yankees have signed left-hander Josh Romanski.

Romanski, 23, is a former 4th round pick for Milwaukee. Mike Axisa [...]
