January 26, 2010 by · 5 Comments

According to Yahoo! Sports’ Tim Brown, the Chicago Cubs have signed former Yankee, Xavier Nady, to a one-year deal. He will likely serve as outfield insurance but will also be a platoon candidate, spelling Kosuke Fukudome against left-handers. No word yet on the contract’s financial details, which will be of some interest to Yankee fans. [...]

Damon says he’ll sign this week

January 23, 2010 by · 68 Comments

According to Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman, Johnny Damon has a matter of “days” to take a “low deal” – “probably no more than $5 million guaranteed” – with the Yankees. Apparently, their offer won’t be available to him after the (vague) deadline has passed. Also, the Star-Ledger‘s Marc Carig received a text message from Damon [...]

Gomes tries to sell himself

January 22, 2010 by · 12 Comments

Could the Yankees pursue Jonny Gomes as a right-handed bat? Here’s Gomes via Gordon Wittenmeyer of the Chicago Sun-Times: “Most guys are [seeking multi-year deals]. I think that’s kind of where I stand out with other free agents,’’ he said. “With Rocco [Baldelli], Xavier Nady, Reed Johnson and Jermaine Dye, I’m one of the youngest. [...]

Yanks could face Cubbie competition for Reed Johnson

January 18, 2010 by · 22 Comments

Most of iYankees’ readers believe that Reed Johnson, a career .313/.378/.463 hitter against southpaws, is the best right-handed outfield bat the Yankees can add this winter to bolster their current bench (especially with Jerry Hairston Jr. bound for San Diego). And, while I agree in that Johnson seems like the best platoon fit, unfortunately for [...]

Gardner or Granderson in CF?

January 13, 2010 by · 9 Comments

From Bryan Hoch’s (MLB.com) latest mailbag: Would moving Curtis Granderson to left field and keeping Brett Gardner in center field be an advantage to the Yankees? Do you think this would be possible? – Jose F., Island Park, N.Y. No one within the organization has said anything to that effect publicly, but I do believe [...]

Law: Yanks should just go with Gardner

January 12, 2010 by · 23 Comments

From ESPN’s Keith Law: “Either Nady or [Reed] Johnson represent marginal improvements that may not justify the cost. Neither is really a full-time player. Johnson is strictly a platoon player, and can back up Granderson, but they have Gardner for that. Nady, even when healthy, was a platoon guy until ’08. I’m not a Gardner [...]

Yanks willing to spend only $2M on left field?

January 12, 2010 by · 18 Comments

According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, the Yankees “are telling free agents that they only have $2 million, at most, to spend on a left fielder,” as Hal Steinbrenner’s desire to stay within a particular payroll structure this winter is a lot stronger than his father’s ever was. This is bad news for [...]

Well said?

January 3, 2010 by · 9 Comments

From Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record: The Yankee GM recently said he was passing on Xavier Nady because he didn’t want to go over budget. Seriously? With a $200 million payroll, the Bombers could’ve easily absorbed a 1 percent spike for a gamble on Nady. As one major league executive put it, “When the [...]

Quick Bits: Left Field, Xavier Nady, Mark Newman

December 30, 2009 by · 1 Comment

Here are three quick items on the day: Moshe over at TYU believes that the Yankees have adopted an approach that looks for payroll flexibility in left field, allowing the front office to divert resources to pitching and players at premium positions (like Joe Mauer). In his post, Moshe notes that Brian Cashman “sees left [...]

Nady too pricey for New York?

December 28, 2009 by · 4 Comments

Yesterday, I wrote about Xavier Nady as a possible left field option for the Yankees, though I also emphasized that the health of his surgically repaired arm is likely an issue. Today, however, Bryan Hoch actually states that the principal problem the Yankees have with Nady is not his recent Tommy John surgery, rather, it’s [...]

Melky on the move (again)?

December 28, 2009 by · 2 Comments

According to Dave O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves could choose to move the recently acquired Melky Cabrera before he ever gets to play a game for Atlanta. “The Braves could use Cabrera or another outfielder in a trade for Uggla or another slugger,” notes O’Brien, as he attempts to explain Atlanta’s thought process [...]
