Jays to grant extension window for Halladay trading partner?

At this point, they’re considering it, says Jordan Bastian (via ESPN):
Considering Halladay is only under contract through 2010, one way for the Jays to potentially get more in a trade would be to give another team a window in which to discuss a contract extension with the pitcher. Anthopoulos declined comment on such a scenario, but MLB.com has learned that the Jays will consider granting such a window in trade talks if it means the return is significantly greater.
If the Blue Jays do offer their trading partner a window in which to negotiate a lucrative contract extension with Roy Halladay, it could very well benefit Toronto in that it increases his value a bit, as he can be had long-term. Then again, most organizations aren’t going to be able to offer the type of prospect talent that the Jays will desire, on top of a $100 million extension (an estimate).
In view of this news, I don’t think that Brian Cashman will suddenly feel more inclined to give up players like Jesus Montero and Austin Jackson in order to acquire Halladay, even if it is for more than a year. Again, it’s an extension that the Yankees would have to pay for (it’s not like the Jays are trading an affordable contract). The money is an obvious issue and with major financial commitments to both CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, I doubt the club would want 3 starters (with 2 of them over 30) consuming such a significant part of the team’s resources.
Eh, this whole thing seems far too Johan Santana-ish to me.

An extension window seems nice at first, then when you realize you are trading for the right to be locked into that huge of a financial commitment, it doesn’t seem so awesome anymore. Is Doc one of the best pitchers in baseball? Sure. Do you really want to be paying for his 34-40 year old seasons at $20M+ per season? Maybe not. Do you want to trade 3 or 4 of your top prospects for that right? I don’t.
