Chapman’s payday

Aroldis Chapman apparently loves it in America. I’m sure he’ll love it even more once he receives his deal.
From Ken Davidoff (Newsday):
Cuban prospect Aroldis Chapman changed agents, and with the experienced Hendricks brothers now running this bidding, you can expect less of a sideshow element. And fewer projections of Chapman getting a $60 million signing bonus. I’d be surprised if Chapman got $25 million. And sure, you can say the Yankees are the favorites to sign Chapman, although I’d be surprised if he spent the majority of his 2010 season in the major leagues, no matter where he signs.
Based on Davidoff’s $25 million projection, which is inline with the $20 million discussed in Anthony McCarron’s piece, it appears as though we can safely assume that Chapman won’t be receiving a contract in the $30-60 million range, or at least that a contract of that size would be perceived as a tremendous financial risk amongst baseball insiders. If the Yankees, who are considered the leaders in the Chapman sweepstakes (along with the Red Sox), can sign him for less than $25 million, as Davidoff projects, I think most Yankee fans would be pretty pleased with that investment.

If you can sign Chapman for 5 or 6 years for 20 or 25 million then you have to jump on it! I have to say this is some good news because for a minute I thought there was going to be a pretty high bidding war for the kid.

Agreed. If it’s “only” $20-25 million, do it.

It does feel funny saying “only” 20-25 million but still… 25 million for only 5 years is 5 million per and if you back end some of it to have him making only 2 or 3 million the first two years you have a prospect who was just a high ranking international free agent no different than any other.

Any GM that gives this guy a $60 million signing bonus should be locked in an insane asylum.

It’s not a signing bonus it’s his actual contract and no one even believed for a minute he would receive 60 million, that is a Scott Boris like number… Remember when Tex was going to get a 10 year deal? How’d that work out?
45-50 million is what I originally thought he would get which is high but at only 8 million a year it is doable for a lefty with that kind of talent, at 25-30 million over 5-6 years you have to sign him it drops the risk to almost none.

I’ll feel very comfortable if the deal is in this range, although $25 million is still a good chunk of change.

5 million or so per year is a lot better than 60 million for 6 years…

Should it concern anyone this is the second picture that has came out with him and some skanky ass bitches in whore outfits? the last one had like see through shit on… I mean I know you are the new thing and girls are throwing themselves at you but come on, pictures with these hoes all the time? Be smarter than that! New York will be tough on this kid if he doesn’t get it together a little more. My only concern with Aroldis is his maturity level coming from a communist country with nothing and being brought to America as a hero almost.

These were taken when he stopped at a strip club in Boston. I think the pics you might be referring to were from the same night out. I’m not sure, though. Either way, it is somewhat of a problem if it becomes too much, too quick. At the same time, he’s a young kid and will have a lot of money. He’s going to do things like this, hopefully, he’ll try to experience everything in moderation.

I have no problem with him having fun as long as it doesn’t become a “Doc” Gooden thing.
