Joe Mauer, 26, has been named the American League’s Most Valuable Player after hitting a robust .365/.444/.587 in 2009. Remarkably, despite missing a month of time due to some significant back problems, Mauer hit 28 home runs and drove in 96 RBI, both of which are career highs. The Minnesotan also led the American League with a .438 wOBA and was worth 8.2 WAR, the third highest figure in baseball, according to FanGraphs. Most importantly, though, he did his offensive damage as a catcher, making his numbers even more impressive. Factor in his team leadership, defense, and there you have it—an MVP. He was, in my opinion, the most deserving of the honor.
In case you were wondering, with regards to the voting, Mark Teixeira came in 2nd and Derek Jeter in 3rd.
