Cashman discusses spending, bullpen, rotation, outfield

Last night, Dan Martin (NY Post) caught up with Brian Cashman at the Ziegfeld Theatre in midtown, as Cashman was in attendance for the premiere of the Yankees’ Official 2009 World Series film. Cashman, of course, did not disappoint, providing Martin with some newsworthy comments and interesting remarks about the Yankees’ plans this winter.
Here he is on the team’s offseason spending, as compared to last year:
“We spent a lot of money last year,” said Cashman, who dumped a combined $429 million on Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte and watched the quartet play a big part in the Yankees winning the World Series. “We’re not going to spend as much this year.”
For the Yankees, it would be nearly impossible for them to spend as much money as they did a winter ago. With that said, Cashman’s comment does not mean that the team won’t spend money this offseason, or that they’re looking to decrease their payroll. Instead, all it really indicates is that they won’t hand out another $429 million in contracts.
Cashman also went on to say that the bullpen is not an “area of obvious need” going forward. Instead, he cited the starting rotation and the outfield as the two areas of concern, stating that the team has to “look at the rotation, look at left field” and decide whether or not to “retain Johnny Damon, promote an Austin Jackson or look elsewhere.”
Of the three options put forth by Cashman, I’m hoping that they choose to “look elsewhere.”
