Yanks lying in wait for Holliday?

In Phil Rogers’ latest piece in the Chicago Tribune, Rogers briefly discusses the current market for free agent left fielder Matt Holliday. Rogers’ report comes a few days after the Cardinals recently presented the 29-year old (and his agent, Scott Boras) with a formal contract offer. Despite the proactive gestures put forth by St. Louis’ front office, Rogers wonders whether or not the Yankees, who have, for the most part, stood quietly on the hinterlands of the Holliday sweepstakes even with their notoriously deep pockets, would ultimately “change their minds” and become more involved in the slugger’s market “if this round of talks [with Holliday] leads nowhere for the Cardinals.”
However, given the Yankees’ payroll concerns, is this idea financially practical?
While many have seemingly written off the Yankees from signing the powerful outfielder due to Hal Steinbrenner’s desire to lower the club’s 2010 payroll, Rogers questions this notion. “A lot of rival executives are suspicious of the Yankees’ leaked plans to cut payroll,” he notes, and essentially ponders whether or not, for Holliday, the Yankees are once again employing what we can fondly refer to as the Teixeira strategy. Perhaps the organization is merely biding its time, as it cleverly releases disinformation regarding its payroll while waiting for Holliday’s current price to fall. Maybe then Brian Cashman will pounce on his prey with a surprisingly strong bid. It’s certainly a possibility as the Yankees’ discreet style — staying out of the market so as not to create a market — seems like the smart play.

yea maybe the yankees will pull off what they did with mark texiera last year. you never know but im guessing they wont add another 9 figure contract with a left fielder. my guess they spend it on a number 2 or 3 starter not that it will cost them 9 figures but if they do they probably wont have enough for matt holliday.

With the Phillies adding Halladay and the Red Sox adding Lackey we are going to need to pull a pitcher out of our asses real soon because those two teams strengthening their rotation only makes ours look weaker.
Sabathia Vs Lester
Beckett Vs Burnett
Lackey Vs Pettitte
Buchholz Vs Joba
They have a clear advantage in games 2-4 unless we plan on pitching CC 3 times again in which case we still only have an advantage in the 3 games he pitches.

After the things that have taken place, I’m starting to like our chances with Holliday now….

We need a starting pitcher though… More now than we even did before we need a pitcher, to then go and spend all out money on just Holliday doesn’t make sense! If we can get both Holliday and Sheets I am for it but if not I would much rather have Cameron and Sheets than just Holliday.

Well I bet you don’t like your chances of getting Holliday now that the Cardinals have offered Holliday an 8 year deal worth a reported 16 million per… It’s the right amount of money per year but it’s way to long of a deal and because of that Holliday would be an idiot to turn it down!

I am going to be so pissed off if we go through this entire offseason and end up with Johnny Damon for another 2-3 years!!! I thought we had just gotten rid of the prick and now because Cashman appears to be in love with the guy the only real option is to either give in to what he wants or hope he lowers his demand if no one else wants him. Personally I go with option C and say none of the above and I would sign another one of the DH’s available but it doesn’t look like the Yankees will do that otherwise they would have signed Matsui.
With Cameron, Matsui and Holliday all coming off the boards it looks as though The Yankees are going to get there wish and eventually Johnny Damon will accept a 2-3 year deal and we are all screwed!

Now there is a lineup that doesn’t scare you at all! In fact I wouldn’t say it’s much better than the Red Sox at this point when you consider how much of a slip I expect Damon to take in his power department and without power he doesn’t make a very good DH. We have no real protection for Alex and Granderson takes over for Matsui in the lineup so we have three lefties again but instead of 2 of them hitting lefties well and one being average we now have one lefty which can’t hit lefties at all and the other can barley do it.
As the realization is setting in that we pretty much just got stuck with Damon I’m pretty pissed! I’m out for the night, what a shitty realization!
