Yanks check in on Capps

December 19, 2009, 2:00 pm by iYankees · 4 Comments

According to the Daily News’ Anthony McCarron, the Yankee and the Mets are interested in free agent reliever Matt Capps, the one-time closer for the Pirates who was recently non-tendered by Pittsburgh. Capps, at 26, is a promising young pitcher who is known for his strike-throwing approach — only 50 walks over 271 2/3 innings in the Majors — though he has suffered from injuries over the past two seasons, limiting his effectiveness (in 2008, it was shoulder bursitis, in 2009, Capps’ elbow was the unfortunate victim of a Geovanny Soto liner).

“We’ve had discussions,” stated Capps’ agent, Paul Kinzer, when asked about the interest in his client from the Yankees (and the Mets). “That’s all I can say at this point. There’s nothing close. They’ve both reached out. We’ve got a few teams being more aggressive. We aren’t in a rush. We’re still listening to everything.” From what I’ve read, the Nationals seem very aggressive in their pursuit of Capps, and could be the likeliest destination for him (he’s expected to make a decision soon). They need a closer and Capps seems eager to fulfill that role. He may not be open to the idea of being a setup man, which could preclude the Yankees from adding him to their ‘pen.

That would be a great move. I’m hoping he signs with the Yankees or an NL team

if Matt Capps proves to be healthy then why not sign him as a set up man. Mariano is 40 so Capps could become the closer 2 or 3 seasons from now

I could see Capps being an OK setup man in the AL but I really don’t have much faith in him becoming the future closer for the Yankees even if they did sign him, his stuff is good and plays up in the NL but he gives up way too many HRs to left handed hitters for me, and especially in Yankee stadium that could end up biting him.
