Yanks will try to match offers for Wang

According to the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo (props to RAB), there are fifteen teams that are currently interested in Chien-Ming Wang. We know the Yankees, Mets, and Cardinals are three of those teams, plus Cafardo says the Red Sox are most likely in on him, as well. It looks like the bidding for the sinker specialist could become very competitive.
Still, according to Cafardo’s report, the Yankees “would like to match any final offer” from another team, for their former “ace” right-hander. While the phrase “any” has its limits here — the Yankees non-tendered Wang for a reason, of course — if Cafardo’s information is, indeed, accurate, it indicates that the Yankees will do what they can in order to make sure that their homegrown product doesn’t join another club. Hopefully, with a good bid, they’ll win him back.
I think the depth Wang provides is better than what we would get from all other free agents outside of Ben Sheets.
