Yanks in “serious talks” with Jerry Hairston?

After being cited as one of five teams interested in acquiring Jerry Hairston Jr. last night, earlier today, ESPN’s Chris Singleton tweeted (props to MLBTR) that the versatile infielder is in “serious talks” with the Yankees. Also, this morning, in a conflicting report from Buster Olney, we heard the Yankees were in no rush to sign another right-handed bat, which Hairston is. However, I wonder if a Hairston signing would, in fact, prevent the Yankees from adding a Reed Johnson type, as well. They may see Hairston as more of a utility infielder, although that’s purely speculation (edit—today, Matt over at TYU tackled this possibility a bit, logistically, and the idea does seem somewhat possible).

In view of the conflicting reports, I’m not sure what to think with regards to how serious the discussions really are. Two things are clear, though—the Yanks like Jerry Hairston Jr. for their bench and can certainly afford to bring him back.
