Super Bits: Jose Tabata, Brian Giles, Josh Beckett

February 7, 2010, 11:35 am by iYankees · 6 Comments

Here are a few general news items on the afternoon:

  • There are some questions concerning Jose Tabata’s age as he might actually be in his mid-20’s.
  • Brian Giles, who had been linked to the Yankees, has signed a minor-league deal with the Dodgers.
  • According to Nick Cafardo, the Red Sox are hesitant to grant Josh Beckett a contract extension.

Cafardo adds that, due to health concerns, the organization would only provide Beckett with a three-year offer, at most. The Red Sox are apparently concerned about Beckett’s shoulder holding up over a long-term deal. I was always under the impression that the Sawx would retain him, in the end, but, if the fiery Texan enters the free agent market after the 2010 season is over, perhaps we’ll see the two part ways (and maybe the Yankees will take a look at him).

I can see the Sox making a very strong bid for Cliff Lee and showing much less interest in Beckett.

I can also see the Yanks & Boston squaring off for Lee’s services and Lee will greatly benefit. IMO.

Basil…If Beckett does go free agent next year, I agree the yanks will probably push harder for Lee.

That very well may be a choice Cashman will have to make in November and i’m sure a lot depends on this season. But, if I had to pick right now I would choose Lee. Although he’s 2 yrs older than Beckett, Lee has been the better pitcher over the last 2 seasons and gets an edge being a lefty in Yankee stadium.

            1-CC,AJ,LEE,JAVY,JOBA or HUGHES
            2-CC,AJ,BECKETT,JAVY,JOBA or HUGHES
            3-CC,AJ,LEE,JOBA,HUGHES
            4-CC,AJ,BECKETT,JOBA,HUGHES
FISHJ,some ideas of Yanks rotation next year.If Andy retires Lee would be a great replacement. If Javy has a good year in pinstripes I could see him back based on his own comments about signing year to year contracts, kinda like Andy.Joba is the wildcard ,he could emerge as a quality starter which could change the Yanks needs.Any other thoughts?
