A new deal for one would mean a new deal for all

While the Yankees have implemented a strict policy regarding extensions – they do not offer them, instead, they wait until a contract expires before renegotiating – many have wondered why the club has not made at least one exception for the face of the franchise, Derek Jeter. However, George King of the NY Post, recently spoke with Brian Cashman about the issue and Cashman made a good point as to why the Yankees have chosen not to offer Jeter a new deal.
According to the GM, it would be organizationally inept and contractually awkward to break longstanding policy and provide Jeter with an extension while Mariano Rivera, in particular, and Joe Girardi will also be free agents at the end of the year. “I don’t think you can separate one from the other,” noted Cashman to King. “I am not saying they’re the same, but the questions will come, ‘If you did one, why didn’t you do the other?’ If this was Kansas City, it would be different—but it’s not.” Essentially, Cashman claims that bestowing Jeter with a new multiyear contract would create more issues than it would prevent, at least with regards to Rivera and Girardi. As the title states, a new deal for one means a new deal for all. Thus, it seems wise to simply wait until the year’s end to provide anyone with a new deal.

…and of course, once management allows the contracts to expire and they re-sign each of these individuals, it will reinforce the policy with future free agents, ie: “Hey, we didn’t extend Jeter and Rivera (“faces of the franchise,” as it were)…..so don’t even think about it when it comes to your contract.”

Ernie…I would like to apologize to you. You did nothing wrong. I misinterpreted that last line, which you later clarified on line. My tone and anger were directed at the White House. My fault, this is not the place for politics. Again, I apologize if I offended you, which I feel I did. …..And to “iYankees”, I convey the same.

Ernie has the right slant on new contracts, even Cashman didn’t get an extension…of course he didn’t ask for one, because of the unwritten rule. Good enough for the boss, good enough for everyone else.

Thanks Ken….and now that you’ll have two Hall-of-Famer/Monument-Park-plaque-type guys who will be held to this policy, it will put the question to rest forever, as long as this regime is running the show in NY.
