Quick Bits: Damon, Dye, Hughes, Jeter

Here are a few quick items on the day:
- According to Jon Heyman, the Tigers might be offering Johnny Damon more than $14M. Huh?
- Joe P. debuted at FanGraphs today, explaining why no one (Yanks included) wants Jermaine Dye.
- Phil Hughes is eager to begin competing for the Yankees’ fifth rotation spot during the spring.
- SG examines the offensive production provided by 35-year old shortstops since the late-1800s.
SG’s analysis is meant to help us understand what we should expect from Derek Jeter going forward, as he continues to age. Needless to say, the results are not particularly encouraging. Jeter will have to buck historical trends in order to be an offensive asset past the age of 36 (and SG’s piece did not even consider the inevitable defensive decline).
