Nats beat Bruney in arbitration

Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports that Brian Bruney, the former Yankee who was traded to the Nationals a few months ago for Rule 5 selection, Jamie Hoffmann, lost his salary arbitration case with Washington. Bruney had requested $1.85 million in his first season with the Nationals, however, after losing his case, he is set to earn $1.5 million in 2010. To some, it seems that the Yankees traded Bruney for nothing more but a spare part in Hoffmann, but, in reality, the salary savings were a factor in the decision to move him. With Hal Steinbrenner in the driver’s seat, the prospect of a possible $2 million payday for the frustrating right-hander was enough incentive to make a deal.
