Quick Bits: A-Rod, Werth, Joba/Hughes

Here are a few items of note on the day:

  • Yesterday, Alex Rodriguez discussed Johnny Damon’s departure, at length, in his press conference.
  • Matt Imbrogno over at TYU wonders if Jayson Werth of the Phillies will be a Yankee target next winter.
  • All eyes were on Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes today, as both pitchers threw live bullpen sessions.

The thing I’m waiting to see is Joba’s velocity in an exhibition game. That will dictate much of the story. Last March, prior to the regular season, there were many reports out about Joba’s diminished fastball (Ryan Howard even spoke about it). Though many of us simply discarded those reports – Spring Training velocity is not seen as a particularly important thing – the velocity issues documented within them rang true during the regular season. If we hear those same scouts are unimpressed with Joba’s fastball again next month, it could be a sign that he is bullpen bound.
