Oh, Charlie…

Here’s Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, on Mariano Rivera, after losing Game 2:

Q. You had to deal with Rivera for two innings tonight, but you made him work, guys got him into a couple of three ball counts, is that something you can build off if you have face him again in the series?

CHARLIE MANUEL: Yeah. We can hit Rivera. We can hit any closer. We’ve proved that. He’s good. He’s one of the best closers in baseball, if not the best. He’s very good. But I’ve seen our team handle good pitching, and you know, we’re definitely capable of scoring runs late in the game.

Manuel’s catching some heat for these comments, and for some statements he made regarding Andy Pettitte, although I think the comments, in both cases, were fair. Perhaps he was sounding overly confident, but as the manager of the Phillies, what else are you going to say about Rivera and Pettitte? People need to relax. I dislike Manuel on a number of levels, but even I can see that he’s merely trying to talk up his club, not talk down the Yankees.

  1. The other one says:

It’s Manuel who cares, half the stuff he says is stuttered and mumbled.
